Week beginning: March1, 2004
Subject: Math
Instructional Focus: Fractions, Problem Solving
Standard I
1.All students will construct and use a variety of strategies to solve problems with emphases on multi-step, non-routine, and application problems.
Standard IV: Number Sense and Number Systems
All students will apply number concepts, relations, systems, theory, and mathematical
structures in problem solving.
10.All students will perform pencil and paper computations using rational numbers in fraction and decimal form.
BELL WORK: Each day
Problem with a hole. Copy the problem from the overhead and determine what the answer is or what information is needed to find an answer. Assessed for Reasoning and Communication. Answers must be communicated in sentences, with complete statements.
Problems #4-7; USD#259 Problem Solving Mathematics Matters
Guided Practice: Monday, 03-01-04
Writing and solving computations in standard algebraic equation format. Students will show the steps for adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. Teach guiding questions.
Example:
+ 1/3 = X
(3/3) + (2/2) 1/3 = X
3/6 + 2/6 = X
5/6 = X
Guided Practice:: Tuesday, 03-02-04
adding fractions with unlike denominators: Show work LCD; Identity Property for Multiplication; adding the fractions after finding common denominators; AND reducing answer to lowest terms.
Problem Solving: Wed-Friday, using UPIC;
Topic Rational Numbers
Individual work: Wed
Record info: Understanding and Plan
Collaboration: Thursday
Implementing the Plan
Final Product: Friday
Communicating how the problem was solved; share with class
Looping (Review) 3-01-04:Divisibility Rules for finding lowest common denominator
3-02-04:Odering fractions, using estimation
3-03-04: Finding lowest common multiple for two numbers
